OC: something floats by, face down

Some things are wrong- always, anywhere, context irrelevant. Even all the way out here- so far flung in to nothingness, so far from land and civilization and law and common sense- but all of that doesn't matter- still some things remain universal. Wrong remains wrong. Simple. Simple. What doesn't, though- what doesn't remain s-so steadily, I mean- is a sense of righteousness. Wrongness, yes- but nothing feels right. It's simple on land- simple, really; follow the laws of your monarch, the sensibilities of your parents, the mores of society, and bring to task those who stand in opposition of them, and you've done right. That isn't the case out here in Nothing.

Something about the isolation, the distance, the monotony- one of those, some of those- it changes the balance of things. What might have been heroism and justice once becomes nothing but violence- doesn't dissipate as fast in water as you would hope, by the way- it tends to linger on top in increasingly longer, uglier streaks, unsinking, unmixing-- what once was chivalry and glory and simply right seems hard to tell apart from the actions of a predator now. I doubt sharks feel justified as they follow the scent of blood; I doubt they feel anything about it one way or another, as they're only acting on instinct, hungry and restless.

You forget that isn't normal, sometimes-- that feeling, lack of. Each time the realization strikes you, you drift further in to the water, even when your feet are on land and your body in a crowd. You went so far away that you remain there after you've returned- specifically returned on the physical level- only physical, still gone otherwise. On land, they're eager to hear my stories. I'm done with telling them. I continue to feel the waves when I stand still. ...less
